چکیده

Modern measurement schemes for linear dynamical systems are typically designed so that different sensors can be scheduled to be used at each time step. To determine which sensors to use, various metrics have been suggested. One possible such metric is the observability of the system. Observability is a binary condition determining whether a finite number of measurements suffice to recover the initial state. However to employ observability for sensor scheduling, the binary definition needs to be expanded so that one can measure how observable a system is with a particular measurement scheme, i.e. one needs a metric of observability. Most methods utilizing an observability metric are about sensor selection and not for sensor scheduling. In this dissertation we present a new approach to utilize the observability for sensor scheduling by employing the condition number of the observability matrix as the metric and using column subset selection to create an algorithm to choose which sensors to use at each time step. To this end we use a rank revealing QR factorization algorithm to select sensors. Several numerical experiments are used to demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme.

A JOINT DUTY CYCLE SCHEDULING AND ENERGY AWARE ROUTING APPROACH BASED ON EVOLUTIONARY GAME FOR WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS

Network throughput and energy conservation are two conflicting important performance metrics for wireless sensor networks. Since these two objectives are in conflict with each other, it is difficult to achieve them simultaneously. In this paper, a joint duty cycle scheduling and energy aware routing approach is proposed based on evolutionary game theory which is called DREG. Making a trade-off ...

Near-optimal Sleep Scheduling of a Rechargeable Sensor under Temporal Correlations

In this brief survey, we review and summarize our recent work on efficient sleep scheduling of a rechargeable sensor deployed to detect events that exhibit temporal correlations. We pose the dynamic sensor sleep scheduling question in a stochastic optimization framework. Under complete state observability, we show that the optimal sleep scheduling policy has a very simple structure. In a more r...

Fault Tolerant Stabilizability of Multi-Hop Control Networks

A Multi-hop Control Network (MCN) consists of a plant where the communication between sensor, actuator and computational unit is supported by a wireless multi-hop communication network, and data flow is performed using scheduling and routing of sensing and actuation data. We address the problem of characterizing controllability and observability of a MCN, by means of necessary and sufficient co...

Estimation Entropy and Optimal Observability

We consider a pair of correlated processes {Zn}n=−∞ and {Sn}n=−∞, where the former is observable and the latter is hidden. The uncertainty in the estimation of Sn upon the finite past history of Zn−1 0 is H(Sn|Z n−1 0 ) which is a sequence of n. The limit of Cesaro mean of this sequence is called the estimation entropy. We show that the estimation entropy is the long run average entropy of the ...

Optimal Sensor Location for Nonlinear Dynamic Systems via Empirical Gramians

This paper presents a new approach for determining sensor locations for nonlinear dynamic systems. The method uses empirical observability gramians for observability analysis and combines the information from this investigation with observability measures which have been previously proposed in the literature. This approach offers the advantage over other methods in that it is directly applicabl...
